South of the Convergence

South of the Convergence is my interpretation of the fragility of the continent of Antarctica observed at its fringes. These images were made in a region known as the Antarctic Convergence where the Southern Ocean encircling Antarctica meets the warmer waters to the north.\n\nI photographed abstract views of icebergs and ice floes from the top of an icebreaker ship and noticed the fast-changing shapes and textures on the ocean surface that began to reinterpret the surrounding ether and the natural structures of ice in a way that freed itself from the subject matter, and the ambiguity of scale and substance helped the subject transcend its source which started to lose its original identity. The landscape around me was transformed into a non-object, often drawing a wide range of associations with aerial, interplanetary and lunar landscapes. \n\nIt made me appreciate the natural beauty of this last untouched continent and also wonder about the fate of The Antarctic Treaty that fully protects its environment today from commercial exploitation. However, in thirty years this treaty becomes modifiable, and the fate of a continent could hang in the balance.
